Facts about E-Waste

Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices. Used electronics which are destined for refurbishment, reuse, resale, salvage recycling through material recovery, or disposal are also considered e-waste. Just a few examples of e-waste include mobile phones, televisions, computers, or any item with a cord or battery. As consumers, it is likely that you have devices in your own home that will eventually become e-waste. However, these devices contain hazardous components, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and PVC, that are harmful to the environment, animals, and humans!

So, what happens when you are done with your electronics? Some people decide to dispose of their electronic devices by dumping them in the trash, which then make their way to the landfill and even third world countries. The toxic components go unregulated into the environment which pose a threat to our planet.

Others decide to recycle their e-waste. While this is the most environmentally sound solution, e-waste can find its way into the wrong hands. According to the World Economic Forum , only 20% of the world’s e-waste is properly handled. It is important to find an e-waste recycler who is qualified and certified to guarantee that your e-waste is being handled in compliance to all state and federal standards/regulations.
